Sun Drenched Parking Lots: A National Energy Assets

Whether it be photovoltaic solar or solar thermal power generation – solar power takes up a lot of space. Solar energy’s footprint is large. Solar can cover considerable real estate and real estate can be expensive.

(Solar modules are expensive enough; Imagine having to purchase land on which to plant a solar park. The cost of the purchased property beneath a solar array would add to the cost of the project, adding to the cost of the power generated from it.)

Envisioning the solar parking garage

La Jolla, Calif.’s Envision Solar wants to convert the wasted space that covers parking garages into a utility.

The company, which has raised $600,000 and is seeking $1.3 million more, plans to put solar panels on the roofs of parking structures. The electricity produced could then be used to power an adjacent building, be fed into the grid or used to charge electric cars in the parking lot.

Solar Carports for Commercial and Corporate Buildings???

In recent months, the energy issue has been grabbing newspaper and talk show headlines, but not very many people may be aware of global events that are taking place behind the scenes that are directly affecting energy supply and pricing. While gas in some parts of the country inches closer to $4.00 per gallon, people wonder when it’s going to stop — and what other options we may have.

Just one of the many recent events seemly neglected by news anchors and overlooked by the general public was the action by Hugo Chevez, the President of Venezuela, to take back all foreign-owned oil facilities in line with his goal to privatize that industry. That means that Exxon Mobil, Chevron and others have been told to vacate their facilities and turn them over to the government. That’s pretty big news. In addition, two weeks ago, Chevez committed another 1 million barrels of oil per day to China. That potentially means 1 million barrels less oil per day going to the US. Ask any oil executive what it would mean to reduce our oil supply by 1 million barrels a day and the response would be gas prices rising to $5.00-6.00 per gallon.
