Investing in the Sun

Four years ago, San Diego architect Robert Noble submitted a bid to design a showcase solar array covering the parking lot at Kyocera’s Kearny Mesa plant. He got the job when no other architect put in a proposal.

Today, dozens of companies would elbow for a chance to build such a project, highlighting the cachet currently surrounding solar power.

Firms including Google, Qualcomm, Hewlett-Packard, Kohls and Wal-Mart have built or plan to build solar systems at their campuses or stores. Noble, former head of San Diego architectural firm Tucker Sadler, founded a new company, Envision Solar International Corp., to help companies install solar arrays in their parking lots.

NREL building ‘solar tree’ to give plug-in cars a jolt

Golden-based National Renewable Energy Laboratory is spending about $40,000 to build a “solar tree” — an on-site, renewable recharge station for electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The new parking structure will be designed and engineered by Envision Solar LLC of La Jolla, Calif.

The tree is essentially a metal frame — or canopy — that supports photovoltaic cells above a parking lot. The cells convert sunshine into electricity, and the frame has a plug to connect to the car’s battery battery. The solar panels also offer shade to cars parked underneath.

Solar Forest: Interview with Bob Noble

I showed up for a tour of the Kyocera parking lot on a warm sunny San Diego day. That really doesn’t sound that exciting does it? But wait a minute … this looks more like a futuristic movie set than a parking lot because it is filled with what have been coined Solar Trees™ by Envision Solar, the company responsible for the design and installation of this project.

Envision a Solar Parking Lot: Cool, Clean and Green

Solar Trees. Solar Groves. The value of shade in the future economy. Bio-mimicry. My little brain was racing to absorb all the solar heat coming through the phone. I spent nearly an hour talking with Robert Noble. Trained as an architect, he’s now CEO of Envision Solar in LaJolla, among his several ventures. Envision’s a spin-off from his architectural firm. Their first big project was to solarize a parking lot for Kyocera in San Diego. Appropriately Kyocera maunfactures solar components, and they wanted a showcase. They got it.

Something New Under the Sun

Consumers who can’t afford a full photovoltaic system may also be able to get solar for parts of their home. A San Diego firm called Envision Solar Inc., for instance, says it plans to start selling carports covered with photovoltaic cells to generate power for the home and hybrid cars late next year. The carports are expected to sell for between $5,000 and $8,000.

Rather than parking cars in Envision’s carport, however, the Root Society built a wooden kitchen into it to make it into useable space.

“It’s the staging area for our food. It’s also kind of like our chill space,” said Taylor.

Taylor’s Root Society camp is one of dozens at the festival that incorporated renewable energy technologies into their elaborate art and performance projects this year. Solar panels, in particular, abounded on the desert playa where Burning Man is held.

Parking Lot Power in San Diego

A 235 kilowatt solar photovoltaic array mounted on canopies over a parking lot in San Diego represents the future of parking, if Envision Solar has its way.

Envision offers a support system for a variety of photovoltaic panel components that can be easily installed in parking lots. This installation in San Diego, called a “solar grove,” is at the headquarters of Kyocera Solar, the company that manufactured the photovoltaics.
